Airtable, founded in San Francisco, is a relational database with a spreadsheet's ease of use and interfaces, automations and apps on top1. Its AI works at two levels: Omni builds the base, and field agents work on each record2.

Best for: Teams that share structured data (projects, inventory, content, requests) and want a database they can shape themselves, with AI building and working on it.

Not the right fit for: Companies needing one system of record for orders and finance at scale, or strict per-record access without an upper-tier plan.

What Airtable's AI does

Omni is a conversational builder: asked in plain language, it creates tables, interfaces and automations. Field agents attach AI to a field so that it runs on every record, for example enriching a lead, generating content or sorting feedback by sentiment. Enterprise customers choose which models are enabled, and admins switch AI on per workspace2.

Building with Omni is free and uses no AI credits, even when the monthly allowance has run out3. Field agents and Omni questions draw on credits: a categorisation costs 1 credit, a web search 10 and a document analysis 200. Credits are allocated per paid user (15,000 a month on Team, 20,000 on Business) and pooled, with no rollover; extra packs start at $20 a month for 10,0003.

The ceilings

Airtable's plans cap what a base can hold and do. Team allows 50,000 records and 20 GB per base and 25,000 automation runs a month; Business allows 125,000 records, 100 GB and 100,000 runs, and adds an admin panel4. When a base reaches its record or attachment cap, new records are blocked until the plan is upgraded4. For a growing order book or ticket history, those numbers matter more than the seat price.

Published evidence

  • Code and Theory. Airtable reports that Code and Theory saved more than 5,000 hours in production in a year, with about 500 users across 18 departments, and more than 10,000 hours a year overall. Vendor-reported; the story does not attribute the result to AI.6

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Building with Omni is free and does not use AI credits, even when the monthly allowance has run out.
  • Field agents put AI on every row: categorising, searching the web or analysing documents per record.
  • Read-only users, form submissions and shared links are not billed, which keeps costs down for wide audiences.

Limits

  • Records and attachments are capped per base by plan (50,000 records on Team, 125,000 on Business); reaching a cap blocks new records.
  • Automation runs are capped monthly (25,000 on Team), and the Business plan allows 150 automations per base.
  • AI is metered in credits per paid user, with no rollover; document analysis uses 200 credits per run.

Choose another option if: You want the whole company on one system with AI doing work across processes, or more records than a base allows. OpenLazarus covers the first; a database-backed tool the second.

Pricing

Published: Team $20 per collaborator a month billed annually ($24 monthly); Business $45 ($54 monthly). AI credits included per user, with packs from $20 a month for 10,000.

Questions to ask Airtable

  • How many records will our largest base hold in two years, and which plan does that require?
  • Which field agents would we run on every record, and how many credits a month would they use?
  • Which roles and permissions are available on our plan?
  • How would we connect Airtable to the systems that hold our orders and invoices?
