The strongest tool here for a product sold to customers. For running a company’s own operations, it asks the buyer to design everything, and the app cannot leave Bubble.

Bubble, founded in New York in 2012, is a visual builder for full-stack web and native mobile apps with hosting included1. Its AI generates a complete working app, with interface, logic and database, from a description; the result is edited visually rather than as code2.

Best for: Building a custom web or mobile product for customers, with full control of every screen, without writing code.

Not the right fit for: Running a company’s internal operations with AI, or anyone who needs to export the code or self-host.

What Bubble's AI does

App generation does not use AI credits; a beta AI agent, which adds features, troubleshoots and explains the app, does3. A security dashboard flags exposed API keys and gaps in privacy rules2. The design of the app, including its data and screens, remains the builder's.

Ownership and billing

Bubble states that there is no traditional codebase to export, only a raw export of the application logic as a JSON file, and that self-hosting is not offered3. Usage is metered in workload units: Starter includes 175,000 a month for $32 billed annually, Growth 250,000 for $119 and Team 500,000 for $349. Overage charges begin at 100% of the allowance unless turned off, and a paid plan is required to put an app live4. SSO and a choice of hosting location are Enterprise features4.

Published evidence

  • Ohana. Bubble reports that the sublet marketplace Ohana, built on Bubble, generated $16.2 million in host earnings, grew revenue ninefold year on year and became profitable after about 14 months. Vendor-reported.5

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • Generating an app does not use AI credits.
  • Full control over a customer-facing product: interface, logic, database and native mobile.
  • A security dashboard flags exposed API keys and gaps in privacy rules.

Limits

  • There is no traditional codebase to export, only a JSON export of the app logic, and no self-hosting.
  • Usage is metered in workload units, and overage charges start at 100% of the allowance unless turned off.
  • SSO and hosting-location choice are Enterprise features.
  • Its AI builds the app; it does not do operational work on the company’s records.

Choose another option if: The goal is running the company rather than launching a product. OpenLazarus, Airtable or Glide fit internal operations better.

Pricing

Published, billed annually: Starter $32, Growth $119 and Team $349 a month. A paid plan is needed to go live.

Questions to ask Bubble

  • How many workload units would our app use at expected traffic, and what does overage cost?
  • What could we take with us if we moved off Bubble?
  • Which privacy rules does the generated app set, and how do we test them?
  • Do we need Enterprise for SSO or a specific hosting location?
